Gm, this is a 4-minute read:
Some quick hits for you at the intersection of pop culture and web3.
FIRST, The DeviANTs Discord is open - I’m guessing 50% of my readers have yet to enter the world of Discord, so the best way to get more involved is to join it and I’ll be in there to walk you through it via video and audio. Click here to enter Web3 via Web2.
I was at SXSW 2022, and here are a few photos of what I saw. If you are triggered by lack of masks, viewer discretion is advised.
The Doodles activation was the coolest I’ve seen in awhile (well during 2 years of no activations) and SXSW is known for signaling new tech innovation - this would definitely be a NFT coming out party as SXSW is definitely more of a well-rounded event and would attract more people to the NFT space than say a specific event like I am going to this week in Los Angeles.
The lines wrapped around the massive activation every time I passed by it.
The entrance to the world of the Doodles.
The interior was super fun and was a great way to interact with the artwork of Burnt Toast.
They had Coffee Doods - I grabbed a bag!
Nail Art Bar Doods:
And partnered with Shopify for a cool Exit Through the Gift Store.
I posted the video for this on our Discord in the #Thndr-Frens channel.
I didn’t get the Doodles NFT when it came out, and over the course of SXSW it rose 30% in value to sit on a floor price of around 13 ETH (US$43,000) so to support this Vancouver-based company I bought a $120 FIAT hoodie. Which is still keeping me warm.
Doodles NFT holders got some special perks: exclusive merch, VIP party with Diplo and other cool stuff - I heard a $1.2mm budget for this activation which is similar to usual SXSW and San Diego Comic-Con outdoor ones.
A great coming out party for the Doodles and you can watch what they are all about here.
Another interesting product launch were hybrid cards/NFTs from Hro with an authorized DC Comics license:
You get a pack of 6 cards you can scan into the app to find out its rarity and then trade with others.
See a TikTok I made of how it works on the Discord.
I’m sure you’ve read all the exciting news around Yuga Labs - the creators of the Bored Apes Yacht Club - and their $450mm raise at a $4B valuation - but with the distributed rights this means that 10,000 Ape holders can monetize their NFT - so you might see this soon than later:
Ok, its already happening - this Bored Ape holder is making her own cereal:
…and this collective has licensed out their group of apes for luxury clothing.
There is a bunch of this happening already with BAYC, so you will see a bunch of this stuff out now - the problem, as you can imagine, is how to determine what is authentic and what is a right-click-save-manufacture to the regular consumer.
I can’t imagine the conversations happening at Big Brands right now.
Spawnoki is here
The Oddkey team released 6666 Spawnoki’s in a raffle and I was lucky to get one - you get one of these black and white ones and then over the course of this month they revealed what rarity you got - I got a firestorm version - you can see the rest here. If you read the first issue of Thndr Frens then you know this is a collab between Todd McFarlane and Steve Aoki.
What is the utility? No one knows yet. That is the fun/not fun part of NFTs.
Thanks for reading
I am going to make these newsletters shorter so I can make them more frequent and will be doing some short video/audio pieces as sometimes you need to see this stuff in action.
If you are at NFT LA this week let me know!
For the super timely stuff it will now be posted on the Discord - so join me and your fellow readers of this fine publication and other degens looking to get on the DeviANTs whitelist there and I will be there to answer questions as well as I feel you have many after reading this.
